Oldies, But Goodies

We’re all fascinated by the “latest and the greatest”, but it might be time for some online publishers to consider the “oldies, but goodies” that can found deep in the stacks of world’s library reserved for public domain content.

Public domain content is material you can use without paying any royalty fees and without worrying about potential copyright concerns.  As the name suggests, they “belong” to the public.

In most cases public domain material consists of government-produced publications and things that have had their copyright protection lapse.  That means you might not get the newest written material (oldies), but many of the available titles out there are really powerful and hold up well over time (goodies).

To make matters even better, most marketers haven’t really tapped this resource.  It’s still a pretty wide open field, which gives you a great shot to get a leg up on the competition.

We all know that content is king.  We also know that content procurement and creation can be expensive and time-consuming.  Public domain content provides a great alternative–a way to build meaningful resources without spending a dime to do so.

Quality: The #1 Online Publishing Consideration

Sat, Apr 25, 2009

Have you been listening to the self-proclaimed gurus who claim that content quality is far less important than content quantity?  If you have, it’s time to pick a new podcast  to load into your MP3 player.

Quantity is great.  It keeps search engines happy.  It provides more opportunities to make connections.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with creating a “thick” site that’s rich with content.

Well, that’s not necessarily true.  It’s really only good to have quantity if you have quality, too.

Let me ask you a question.  Who are you more likely to link to, a guy with a giant site that consists primarily of barely retooled PLR content or someone who has a much smaller site that contains information you really found valuable.

That’s a no-brainer.  The smaller site wins in a landslide.  Why?  Because nothing can replace quality.  Good content is how online publishers get backlinks to their sites.  It’s the reason people are motivated to tell their friends about what’s happening.

Size does matter, but quality matters more.

It’s fine to “go big”, but that should only happen if you’re going big and good.

To your success,
Bren

Ready? Set? GO!!!

Go.  That’s the most important word in the world of online publishing.  At some point, you have to put the planning and research down for awhile.  At some point, it’s time to get to work.  Action is what separates thousands of would-be online success stories from those who really are making money online.

There are many resources out there.  You can always learn more.  None of that knowledge is worth a hoot, however, if it isn’t coupled with a willingness to “go”.

No one is ever going to know how many great ideas and high-potential businesses never really got started because the person with the ideas just couldn’t bring themselves to finally spring into action.

Don’t make that mistake.  Online publishing is a great business opportunity, but it doesn’t happen as a result of mere planning and preparation. It requires the ability to finally let loose and to put your ideas into action.  Don’t allow yourself to get so bogged down that you experience “paralysis by analysis”.  Don’t let your fears of failure stand in the way of success.

Ready?  Set?

Go.

Information Product Dos and Don’ts

Wed, Apr 8, 2009

Information is a key element for Internet marketing, but never let your  passion for the topic get out of control. The more you’re emotionally invested in your information product, the easier it is to make this mistake.

If you create an amazing eBook on a topic that fascinates you, don’t assume it will sell. Unless you identify your market and know how to find that market, you’re wasting your time. Savvy Internet product marketers don’t even start writing an eBook or choosing an affiliate product until they find an interested market.

Have you ever encountered a struggling student trying to sell magazine subscriptions by going door to door?   He has something to sell, but you aren’t interested.   So he spends hours searching for one customer at a time and missing the mark more often than making a sale.

What if he took a different approach and went to doctors’ offices, businesses or auto repair shops to sell magazines to places where customers had to wait and needed entertainment? That’s targeting his market to willing buyers.

In online marketing, you can do this much easier with a few mouse clicks. Start by listening into the conversation in your niche. The “conversation” is found in discussion forums and Web 2.0 sites that are dedicated to the niche topic.

What questions are they asking? What information is difficult to find? What new twist do you pick up on using a product or concept already on the market? The answer to any of these questions can be the perfect start for identifying and developing an eBook.

Next, check out ClickBank eBook selections. Look in the section that best relates to your niche. What eBooks are offered that relate to this topic? Did you find existing eBooks that answer any of the questions you found from your conversation research?

If there’s an eBook that works, then consider using it as an affiliate product. You can use this product in your initial campaign, and then develop your own eBook that expands on this information or takes the information in a different direction.

While you’re researching, check Amazon and eBay to see if there are comparable information products. And what does a Google search show? You’re likely to find other marketers who are using similar information products.

Scan a dozen websites that use these products. You might find other products on their sites and see how they are presented. Copy these URLs for future reference to use in marketing your eBook directly to these sites.

If you just want to write about your obscure hobby, do it in a blog and a few people may read it. But if you want to sell information products, locate potential buyers and sample their interests before writing or marketing an eBook. That’s the way smart marketers use the power of the Internet to literally make money while they sleep.

Online Marketers Need to Ask the Right Questions

Wed, Apr 1, 2009

Smart online marketers know that asking the right questions is the most important aspect of establishing your expertise in a successful niche. Let’s say your niche is “how to avoid foreclosure on your home.”

The tendency is to jump ahead of your prospects and give them information on loan consolidation or credit protection. Those are major issues, but not the only issues. If you aren’t sure what kind of questions people facing foreclosure ask, get into forums on that topic and pay attention to what solutions they need.

Talk to anyone you know who’s facing this problem. Then ask yourself these basics (regardless of the niche topic):

  • Are the immediate concerns personal or financial?

  • What are the emotional issues?

  • What happens next?

  • What are creative, non-traditional ways to approach the problem?

  • What products or services does a person in this situation need or want?

Notice how these “personal impact” questions take your thinking processes beyond the usual information “how to” ideas. That’s because each of these questions represents a potential information product, video “how to” and affiliate product that takes a different twist than the generic options.

You can also use the contrary approach. Information products tend to show what happens when the buyer follows the advice. Some viewers will read your sales letter and dismiss it saying, “So what if I don’t follow that advice?”

Show them what happens by preparing an information product that explains the worst-case scenario or the less than ideal situation. Then wrap up the final pages by pitching how to change this for the better with the positive spin version.

Other questions that you can use as idea starters for product development are:

  • At what point is the buyer likely to get stuck or frustrated implementing the system?

  • What skills need to be improved to use this knowledge to move to higher level of profits?

  • What are the biggest obstacles to success for a newcomer to this system?

  • How to you want the buyer to feel after using (implementing, reading) this product?

And the final, critically important question is: What do you want buyers to say in recommending your product? If you want them to say, it’s simple, concise, sophisticated or worthwhile then make sure you build those features into the product and highlight them in your sales copy.

So you want to start an online business?

Mon, Mar 30, 2009

So you want to start an online business.  Just like a brick and mortar business, there are things to tend to before you actually start finding clients and making some money.  Here are some tips for your journey into entrepreneurship.

1.  Flesh out that idea.  At this point most traditional businesses would construct a business plan.  It details your strategy for getting started, how you will make sales and when you expect a profit, among other things.  If you know what area you will start with, that’s great.  If you only have a general idea, you need to do some more digging.

2.  Do some keyword research.  This is a helpful tool for identifying your market and for niche marketing.  When people search on the Internet, they use certain words that will return the results they seek.  Those keywords can be widely used (getting millions of results) or not (with a few thousand results).  Some words are overused on the web.  You’ll want to pass those up in favor of others that haven’t been exploited by online marketers.  Keep a record of those keywords for later.

3.  Set up an office.  You’ll need a place to work with a computer, desk, chair, and Internet access.  Most people have all-in-one printers so they can manage other office tasks easily.  Since your business runs in cyberspace, invest in the fastest Internet connection you can get in your area.  Don’t entrust your business profits to dial-up.

4.  Create an online presence.  This will be your headquarters.  If you don’t know how to create a website, do a little reading on the subject.  In the meantime, shop around for a good webhost.  Here are a few things to look for:  tutorials for set-up, decent price, lots of bandwidth, design templates, extras, and 24-hour assistance.  No one wants to be left hanging after they’ve paid their money.

5.  Choose a domain name.  The name of your business website needs to appeal to the search engines.  You can use some of those keywords you found to come up with a name that is relevant to your business and catchy at the same time.  When using more than three words, use hyphens between words to make the name easier to read.  A domain name search will tell if the name is available or not.  Register your domain name with a reputable service.  Be sure to renew it every year so you don’t lose it.

6.  Use some simple techniques to drive traffic your way.  SEO content is one avenue.  If you love to write, create eBooks to sell or give away on your site.  Join business forums to learn about online marketing and how to showcase your product.  For selling products, you’ll need to add an online storefront to your website.

Are you interested in starting an online business?  Use these tips to get the ball rolling on your venture.

How to Profit Selling Information on the ‘Net

Sun, Mar 29, 2009

Comments Off

When the Internet came about to connect billions of users from all over the world, a business opportunity was born based on the insatiable appetite of consumers. When people go online, it’s information that they’re seeking above all else.

Some information comes in the form of free content on websites, or through emails getting passed from one person to the next. But if you want to profit selling information on the ‘net, then you’ll want to position yourself as a virtual expert in your niche and capitalize on the problems of others where you provide a solution to their needs.

Some people profit selling information on the ‘net in eBook form. Others sell personalized consultations for thousands of dollars. Some have made their living writing valuable content and giving it away with hyperlinks that take the reader to an information product they can buy, giving the author of the freebie a cut of the profits.

The key to profiting from the sale of information on the ‘net is to build trust with your audience. Unfortunately, when a customer stops by your website, you can’t shake their hand and smile while you convince them to upgrade their purchase. But you can write compelling sales copy that shatters their doubts and fears and convinces them to trust you.

At that point in the transaction, if you want to profit from selling information on the ‘net for your long-term strategy, then you’ll want to make sure that what you deliver goes above and beyond their expectations so that they’ll continue buying from you in the future.

Some people wonder what the potential is to profit from selling information on the ‘net. The answer is simple – there are no limits, no ceilings, and no barrier between you and your success.

You can launch information products for sale on the ‘net for next to nothing. You can do it on a 100% free option if you promoted it through a free Wordpress blog using article directories and sig files with PayPal as your paying option, or you can take a more legitimate approach and use fee-based tools like your own domain, a shopping cart set up through ClickBank, and strategic banner ad placement.

If you want to know how to profit selling information products on the ‘net, then you need to look at the successful marketers who have paved the way for you. Learn about list building, social networking, and testing your efforts for good measure. There are unlimited opportunities for people who want to market info products online, and a constant influx of hungry buyers permeating the marketplace in search of solutions to their own needs.

Are you using Twitter effectively?  If not then this report will take you by the hand in setting up an account, and the possible ways of sending FREE traffic to your sites.

“You have a split second to grab your target audience by the eyeballs and pull them into your lair – and if you can’t manage to do it, you’ll be back flipping burgers or cutting through cubicle mazes in no time.”

What Is Twitter?

It’s a strange cross between an instant message and a blog. People are short and to the point. Some get creative and post haiku-like messages. Have you ever emailed someone and instantly received an email back saying, “I’m away from the office right now, but…?”

It’s kind of like that – only this time, everyone sees what you’re doing right now and you develop followers similar to the friends on MySpace or Fanpop sites. You and your friends can turn Twitter on and off so that you’re not notified of every move your friends make.
